Economy: As a general misconception, it is accepted that the unit costs of steel constructions are rather high than the other construction systems. However the steel construction have the following aspects: - It complies with nonstandard structures easily especially in industrial buildings,
- Its labor is completed and the building is opened for operation in a shorter period,
- It complies with all climatic conditions,
- It is lighter and requires less shipment costs,
- Since it is light, it may be applied to worse grounds. Its basic costs are less. As it is supervised easily, its security for the earthquake may be controlled.
- It is capable of carrying the large space loads with small cross-sections.
Based on the abovementioned grounds, steel construction production is quite an economic option contrary to general assumptions. Large Space, Small Cross-Section: Spaces which are larger compared to the reinforced concrete may be exceeded with smaller and multiple optional sections and lighter weights, thus increasing the removable loads. As a natural consequence result, the basic sizes shrink and larger buildings can be constructed on worse grounds. Steel construction systems enable the construction of multi-floor buildings which do not comprise only columns. Since the weight of the building is low, the width cross-sections of the high buildings even at the ground floor are smaller than the dimensions of the cross-sections in the concrete systems. Based on this feature, steel is also preferred for reinforcement projects. Recycling of Materials: Another advantage of steel constructions is the possibility of recycling the materials. A building which is no longer used may be used in another building by dismantling its carriage system. Steel construction may be preferred for a building which is designed to be used temporarily. Materials of any steel construction have scrap value even if they can not be used any more. You can see below the grounds for the preference of steel and for our recommendation of steel construction as a company: • Reliability: In our country which has most of its lands in the earthquake region and hosted many an earthquakes causing the death of thousands of people and ten thousands of homeless people, unfortunately we have also witnessed the destruction of buildings without the impacts of earthquakes. When the reasons for the destruction of these buildings are analyzed, a common reason is found: Unqualified and nonstandard production of concrete. Notwithstanding the latest Law on Building Construction Supervision aimed to control the production and supervision of concrete, the facts that supervision only includes the samples and standard and rigid manufacturing such as steel is not possible (the formation of reinforced concrete by combining the reinforced concrete with steel and steel itself increases the difficulties in the details) arise the first difficulty about the reinforced concrete systems. Doubtlessly, it will not result in any difficulty for the systems which are estimated according to static and reinforced concrete calculation procedures and manufactured in compliance with the standards and reinforced concrete system will reliably provide support for the construction. The real difficulty, as mentioned above, is encountered in the supervision of the production. An advantage of steel construction buildings is to allocate wide life spaces in case of destruction even if they are not built under sufficiently secure conditions. Because steel is rather light and ductile material compared to the concrete. • Formability: Since steel does not have any limits of formability and does not require moulds like concrete, it has become the first preference of the engineers in irregular buildings such as industrial sites and of the architects in the artistic buildings. Furthermore the lack of need for the moulds and for any solidification period like concrete brings the steel in the foreground. The only limit of formability in the steel constructions is your imagination. • Economy: As a general misconception, it is accepted that the unit costs of steel constructions are rather high than the other construction systems. A building which is no longer used may be used in another building by dismantling its carriage system. Steel construction may be preferred for a building which is designed to be used temporarily. Materials of any steel construction have scrap value even if they can not be used any more. In addition, some drawbacks are also encountered in the steel construction production: • Conditions of Country, Limits of Cross-Section: The alternatives of steel profile sections produced in our plants are very limited due to the low tendency and demand towards the steel construction in our country. Unfortunately, some of the sections seen in the steel profile section tables are not produced in Turkey. This drawback is overcome by using the materials with multi-sections which however increases the labor costs. • High Costs: Low capacity of production and demand also reflects the costs of steel. The price of steel produced in our country is rather high compared to the other countries where steel is densely used. It will be only possible with the settlement of steel construction awareness and the increase in the demand to reduce the costs and vary the section alternatives. • Corrosion: In addition to the fact that the worst enemy of the steel is corrosion, this enemy may be defeated by means of industrial anti-corrosion, paint, epoxy-based products, galvanized, etc. You should note that most of the goods (automobile, white goods, etc.) which are daily used are made of steel and durable for long years and may be protected by means of paints. As a consequence, contemporary construction technology requires the steel construction systems as an obligatory necessity. The earlier the engineers or other occupations realize this fact and insist on its implementation, the more it will contribute to the development of constructions and existence of sound buildings in our country.
